This page is a little off. Right now, I don’t have a picture of the kilt, and it looks like now I’m going to have to make another one soon. It’s a little like making a small afghan, but it has its good points, like a change of yarn. I did not measure how much it took, but I can give you aproximate guidelines for the amounts. I used Red Heart Fiesta, in Meadow, Millenium, and Horizon. Hubby thinks those are just green enough for him, and since they are his faves, I used them. 3 balls of Meadow, 2 balls of Horizon, and 1 ball of Millenium should make the entire thing with some leftovers. I used the 3 oz balls.
with color A, the 3-ball yarn, and a size H hook, make a chain long enough to wrap around subject’s waist 1.5 times.
dc in 3rd ch from hook, and dc across.
continue in this yarn for 4 rows.
change to Color C, the 1-ball yarn, and dc across for 2 rows.
change to color B, the 2-ball yarn, and dc across for 3 rows.
change to color A, dc across for 4 rows.
repeat color C, 2 rows.
repeat color B, 3 rows.
repeat color C, 2 rows.
change to color A, 3 rows, fold garment in thirds, and mark (with yarn, joining the stitches together) the folds.
Switch to color C. Start with sc, joining the 2 parts of the garment at the right side, (facing you) and sc across both layers. If the yarn markers don’t add up, don’t force it. just remove the remaining yarn marker, and keep going. sc around the rest of the kilt. ch3
Next row: continue in rounds. TRC around. This is for the belt. ch2, turn.
Next row: dc around.
Belt: ch half the number of starting ch, or enough to go 3/4 the way around subject’s waist. Join in back (fold the garment in half, so that the front is the flap, the back is single layer) and ch that number again, adding 1 ch. DC across, joining center dc in center of upper half of trc row, and dc across. Finish off. Weave in ends. Thread belt in through trc row skipping 3 trc for every weave. Place on subject, tighten.
Kilt is finished.
I wish I could provide a more “tartan” look for the kilt, but I hate doing fptrc (front-post treble crochets) and so I abandoned that idea in favor of a more striped look.
