Crochet for Every Day, Crochet for Life

You will need: about 1000 yds size 10 crochet thread, one size 7 steel hook, and about 1/2 yard 2-way stretch material, something knitted, with spandex in it. Try your local fabric store.

This will make an adjustable size 8-12 Misses swimsuit. If you want a smaller size, try adjusting the pattern on the back. The back can be made exactly like the front for a size 2-6 swimsuit. I admit, I’m making a few assumptions here: 1) that you have the ability to crochet, 2) that you can follow a pattern, 3) that the person making this has a 36C chest (or larger, up to 40 D) and 4) that you read American crochetese well enough to not require photos to complete the pattern. I have included them anyway, as it’s been over a week since I wrote the pattern down and posted it, and my back and shoulders are significantly more photogenic (and no longer peeling).

If you need to lengthen or shorten this pattern, by all means, do so. It is supposed to fit. The best places to do any length adjustments is the center of the midsection, located after Row 12, and before Row 24. Other adjustments you make to this pattern fall into the TOS.

Filet Pattern
Some suggestions: Sun, Southwest Pattern, DragonFly, & DragonFly
Row 89: *sk 2 dc, dc in next dc, ch2,* repeat across, ch4, turn
Row 90: *sk 2 dc, dc in next dc, ch2,* repeat 20x, ch2, dc in same dc, ch2, *sk 2 dc, dc in next dc, ch2,* repeat across, ch4, turn
Row 91: *sk 2 dc, dc in next dc, ch2,* repeat across, ch4, turn
Filet back is 42 sp wide, and can be as long as you wish. 39 spaces long will go to mid-back. More will of course go higher. Choose your own filet pattern, or simply repeat Row 91, 39 times. I chose a partial pattern, and the hummingbird looks fabulous. I left off the flowers in the original filet pattern.
Finishing
In the 6th space of Mile-a-minute pattern on the bust, working sideways along the edge, join thread, ch2, 1 dc, ch2, 2 dc. In the next space, 2dc. In the next, 2dc, ch2, 2dc. In the next sp, 2 dc.  In the next sp, 2dc, ch2, 2dc. In next and 2 following, 2dc. Working on the sides of the front, repeat this pattern until you have 13 loops(the ch2 sps), then dc, hdc, in the next sp, 2sc in each of the next 46 sps, hdc, dc in the next sp, return to pattern as established on front, reversing the sequence of the pattern. Repeat on the opposite side of the front.
Make a chain about 2.5-3.5 yards long. Thread through the loops you made with the shells on the sides of the front and back. Join front to back, corset style. It’s your choice whether you want it laced top-to-bottom, or bottom to top. Do not tug too hard on this as thread, even crocheted thread, will break if exposed to undue pressure.
If the back is too loose, join thread to the last st of filet pattern, ch2, dc in first sp, 2dc in next sps across. Join thread in sp above the beginning shell on bust, ch 100 loosely, end off. Repeat on the other side. Lace through the 2dc sps, tie together; this works best if you tie it after you put it on, or have someone else tie it together once you have the suit on.

Liner
Lay the suit on the fabric, folded so that you have 2 layers. Pin the pineapple portion of the bust to the fabric, and gently cut the fabric around the bust area, without cutting into the crochet at any time. If you feel you must hem the sides, I caution you against this action, but I cannot prevent it. I recommend that you hand sew one layer of the fabric to each portion of the bust, on the inside. The remainder of the fabric should be used for the panty, and the same method for cutting it out be used, except that the fabric should not be folded. Unlace the swimsuit, and lay it out flat on the fabric. Pin the panty to the fabric, and cut the liner out. Again, hand sew this to the front and back of the panty, without sewing any of the liner to the filet portion of the front or back. Hand sew along the sides, carefully.

I have decided to include a few scanned images (from magazines I have laying around) that will fit, with some minor detail adjustments, in the space I have allotted for the back. Remember, please, the back size is entirely responsible for the overall size, so be careful here. I’m a plush size 10-12, and I’ve already admitted that I have had 3 kids. If your size is different, adjust as needed. The size given here is just a guideline for your perfect swimsuit. Please click the thumbnails for the full image.
