Crochet for Every Day, Crochet for Life

You only need about 3 oz of yarn, and that makes 2 hats, and if you buy a 3oz ball of each color for a striped hat, you get 4 hats. Have fun!

I used Lion Brand Jiffy, & an I hook. Don’t ask. It worked.

Beginning hat band
With main color (MC) ch8
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across, ch1, turn
working in back loops only (blsc)
Row 2- 56: blsc across, ch1, turn
join first and last rows, sc across, ch, turn sideways
Beginning hat
Row 1: sc around the side of the band, drop MC, switch to Color A (CA)
working in continuous rounds:
Rows 2-4: sc around, drop CA, Pick up MC
Rows 5-7: sc around, drop MC, Pick up CA
Repeat Rows 2-4, then Rows 5-7 twice more.
lay hat flat, with seam of band in center back. mark edges with contrast color yarn.
Row 22: Continue around to 6 sc from mark, skip next 12 sc, sc in next sc(back of hat), sc across, to 6 sc from mark. skip next 12 sc, sc in front sc, sk 1 sc, sc in back, sk 1 sc, repeat across. (it may sound confusing, but you’re sc joining, it’s just smoother and more appealing to skip one sc, and sc in the next sc on the back)Finish off, weave in ends, and place on head. Pull pigtails through.

Notes: when creating the band, use one color, and then alternate colors after the first row of the hat body. The first row will make the band look better if it’s not changed. I used one color continuously, because I had it available, and it’s my favorite color. The alternation is interesting when using black and white, as this is more accurate recreation of the original.

I designed it based on Abby Scuito’s hat, since I’m a fan of NCIS. My personal favorite color combo is olive green and coffee brown. Can’t help it, I’m a redhead. Any other color combo is doable, and you can use any kind of yarn. I used Lion Brand Jiffy in Pastel Yellow. Lengthen (or shorten, for a child’s size) the band as needed to fit your head and your yarn. If you use any mohair or wool yarn, don’t wash it in hot water.
Okay, I made that green and brown one: hunter and coffee, though, because hubby wanted a hunter and coffee conductor’s hat, and I had leftover yarn. Lots of leftover yarn. Next up: the beanie in stripes of hunter and brown, for a friend.
